That's not my opinion, in case you're wondering, but phrases like that have been flying around in the media the past couple of days. Well, I don't know about North Indians, but I think that Indians in general have a law breaking habit. Horror of horrors, Maharashtrians included.
Take the simplest of examples: our traffic lights. The law is broken from the beginning to the end of that process. Right from the beginning, where you have to pay an 'agency' for getting your driver's license, to the 'stop' line being violated by almost everyone, to being pressured into breaking the signal by the huge truck behind you when there are still 15 seconds to go. And how many of our generously-paunched traffic cop 'mamas' are North Indian? Haven't met a single one in Pune, and most of them are involved in bribery at various levels, are they not?
Having been born and raised in Pune, Maharashtra for the most part of my life, I consider myself a Maharastrian. I can vouch for the fact that we Maharashtrians are no better when it comes to this kind of behaviour. We have crime as well. Don't murders, rapes, robberies happen in Maharashtra? Are all of those carried out by North Indians?
Don't believe such divisive and overarching generalisations, rather let's look within ourselves and stop rowdyism and petty ways to make news.
